Holy Mass in Italian

The Cairns Italian Festival begins with La Messa, a special Mass celebrated in Italian at Saint Monica’s Cathedral by Bishop Joe, who will also bless the festival, officially opening the week’s celebrations. We are deeply grateful to Bishop Joe and the Catholic Diocese of Cairns for supporting this important event and helping us honor the strong connection between faith, culture, and the Italian community in our region.

La Messa is more than a ceremonial opening; it is a celebration of Italian heritage, tradition, and the enduring spirit of the Italian community in North Queensland. For generations, Italian immigrants have brought their customs, language, and sense of community to Cairns, enriching our city’s cultural fabric. This Mass provides a moment to reflect on their contributions, sacrifices, and the values they instilled, while also celebrating the living traditions that continue to unite Italian-Australians today.

Through the solemnity of the Mass, celebrated in the language of their ancestors, participants and attendees are invited to connect with the rich history, cultural identity, and spiritual life that has shaped the Italian community in Cairns. La Messa sets the tone for the festival, offering a heartfelt start to a week of cultural celebration, music, food, and family, and reminding us all of the deep ties between heritage, community, and celebration.
