The Game, The Cup, the anticipation, the honour to win the annual battle. What a spectacle for Football in North Queensland this match will be! The Cairns Italian Festival, with the help of both clubs will bring this exciting game and celebration to life. These two sides will come together on Saturday 2rd August at the Lindsay Australia Stadium Mareeba to be crowned the “Moriconi / Bomben Cup Champions”.

An exciting day where different teams will compete in one of the most famous Italian sports. This action-packed tournament promises to be a thrilling display of athleticism and teamwork, as teams battle it out on the soccer field to claim victory. The Moriconi/Bomben Cup promises to be an event filled with football excitement, nostalgia, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. It will pay tribute to the legacy of Alfio Mareeba United, John the Leichhardt Lions, and the Italian immigrant community, while bringing together football enthusiasts and fostering a sense of community and celebration.

The Name

To honour the immense contributions of Alfio Moriconi and John Bomben, the Moriconi/Bomben Cup was established. It serves as a celebration of their legacy and a testament to their dedication to the sport. Through the Moriconi/Bomben Cup, the dedication to the sport of these two passionate Football Italian immigrants will be never forgotten.

Alf Moriconi (deceased) and John Bomben are two godfathers of football the Far North, both are Italian immigrants who moved to Far North QLD and made it home and helped make football in FNQ what is today. Their two loves – Football and their Clubs, Alfio Mareeba United and John the Leichhardt Lions.

Both Alfio and John helped forge both clubs into the force they are today, but also contributed largely to the growth of the sport in the region, both served time in the former Soccer Far north board, both were involved in the administration and growth of junior and senior football across the entire region. The event serves as a reminder of the incredible contributions made by these two remarkable individuals in shaping the football landscape in the region.
