The Name
To honour the immense contributions of Alfio Moriconi and John Bomben, the Moriconi/Bomben Cup was established. It serves as a celebration of their legacy and a testament to their dedication to the sport. Through the Moriconi/Bomben Cup, the dedication to the sport of these two passionate Football Italian immigrants will be never forgotten.
Alf Moriconi (deceased) and John Bomben are two godfathers of football the Far North, both are Italian immigrants who moved to Far North QLD and made it home and helped make football in FNQ what is today.
Their two loves – Football and their Clubs, Alfio Mareeba United and John the Leichhardt Lions.
These sides will come together on the hollowed turf at Lindsay Australia Stadium, Mareeba on Saturday the 5th of August to be crowned the “Inaugural Moriconi / Bomben Cup Champions.”
Both Alfio and John helped forge both clubs into the force they are today, but also contributed largely to the growth of the sport in the region, both served time in the former Soccer Far north board, both were involved in the administration and growth of junior and senior football across the entire region. The event serves as a reminder of the incredible contributions made by these two remarkable individuals in shaping the football landscape in the region.

The match between mighty Mareeba Bulls and the red men of the Leichhardt lions for the Inaugural Moriconi/Bomben Cup promises to be an exciting and highly anticipated event. With both clubs having a rich history and a passionate fan base, the game is bound to be a thrilling competition, with a lot at stake for the teams involved. Both are huge clubs in the region, steeped with history and silverware and both will be gunning for a win on the 5th of August.

The Over 45’s Game
The over 45 football game featuring the reunion of old players will undoubtedly be a highlight of the event.
